A Puppy, a Choice, and the Power of Hope
What a lovely card to come home to after my holiday — and the story behind it is one I feel is worth sharing, even if it’s a little long.
Just before I left for Singapore, I received a request from a couple asking me to come to their home to euthanise their 8-month-old French Bulldog. He had been diagnosed with a severe congenital heart condition. They were devastated. After consulting a top veterinary cardiologist in Brisbane, they felt certain nothing could give their boy a good life. Then, to make matters worse, he began limping and seemed more lethargic. He’d recently started on beta blockers to help his heart, and they were terrified he might suddenly die. In their minds, euthanasia was the only way to prevent him from suffering.
It was a difficult request to hear. I could empathise with their fear and heartbreak — when you believe your pet is in pain, you want to protect them. So I agreed to come and see them.
When I arrived, they were already in tears, but the puppy met me at the door — bright-eyed, wriggly, full of beans. In that moment, I knew I couldn’t simply go ahead. I sat down with them, listened to the emotional whirlwind they’d been through since his diagnosis, and realised some details didn’t quite add up medically. I asked if they’d mind me calling the cardiologist directly.
Thankfully, he was available. After discussing the case, we agreed the sudden lethargy was likely a side effect of the medication, not a sign of his heart giving up. A reduced dose could make a big difference. The cardiologist also reassured us that many dogs with this condition can live for years, the risk of sudden death is relatively low, and surgery — while expensive — could offer him relief. It didn’t need to be done immediately, giving them time to save.
Then, I took a closer look at the limp — it turned out to be dermatitis between his toes, easily treatable, and I suggested they seek their regular vet’s help.
What followed was one of those moments you never forget: the tears in the room shifted from despair to relief. Their shoulders softened. They had hope again.
That day was not his day to leave this world. With a bit of listening, persistence, and compassion, a life that seemed at its end is now one that is still very much in motion — a happy puppy with time ahead of him, and owners who now feel empowered instead of helpless. ❤️
It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes, even in moments of heartbreak, hope and careful guidance can make all the difference.
